I'm pleased to present another two originals this month. The first is a 5-move selfmate: we have to imagine that White is aiming to force Black to mate him while Black is doing all that he can to avoid giving mate. At present, Black has only two moves available: ... f3 and ... fxe3. White must arrange matters so as to be prepared for either of these moves. He must play 1 Ke1! Now if Black plays 1 ... f3 we have a checking sequence that sets the stage: 2 Qa6+ Rc4 3 Ra3+ Ke4 4 Rd2+ Rc2; and now after 5 Rd1! there is only one move: 5 ... f2#!
